Non-Musical history for today: 1945 – A U.S. Army B-25 bomber crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building, killing 14 and injuring 26. Other than the gaping hole, the ESB was not structurally damaged. That’s one strong building. Lieutenant Colonel William Smith Jr., was piloting a B-25 Mitchell bomber on a routine personnel transport mission from Bedford Army Air Field in Massachusetts to Newark Metropolitan Airport in New Jersey. Smith asked for clearance to land, but he was advised of zero visibility. He wasn’t having it and proceeded anyway. He became disoriented by the fog and turned right instead of left after passing the Chrysler Building. One engine shot out the back of the building and landed on the roof of a neighboring building which caused a fire in a penthouse art studio.
