Beeswax Vinyl Daily February 13, 2024

Non-musical history for today: In New York City, the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers was established to protect the copyrighted musical compositions of its members. You may have heard of ASCAP. That’s it. ASCASP is a not-for-profit performance-rights organization (PRO) that collectively licenses the public performance rights of its members’ musical works to venues, broadcasters, and digital streaming services (music stores). I was a member of ASCAP at one time. They’re not the only player in the game in the US, either. Broadcast Music, Inc., or BMI, is just as big, and SESAC (Society of European Stage Authors and Composers) has become a main player. SESAC is the second oldest performance-rights org in the US. Nearly all the music you hear on Camel City Radio and on the BWVD podcast is covered by ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, SoCAN (Canadian), or PRS (Performing Right Society in the UK).

Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for February 13.

Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza.
