Non-musical history for today: 1958 – Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel Lolita is published in the United States. A lot of controversy surrounded (and still surrounds) that book. I get it. Did you know that Spandau Ballet’s “True” is referencing this book? Seaside arms, pills on the tongue, etc. All inspired by this book. And, of course, one of the greatest Police songs ever, “Don’t Stand So Close To Me,” which references “that famous book by Nabokov.”
Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for August 18.
