Non-musical history for today: 1609 – Shakespeare’s sonnets were first published in London, perhaps illicitly, by the publisher Thomas Thorpe. Nineteenth-century critics thought that he might have published the poems without Bill’s consent. Someone called him “predatory and irresponsible.” But certain modern scholars assert the verdict that he was a reputable publisher, and there is nothing intrinsically irregular about this publication. The bottom line is, no one, publishers and/or otherwise, can make or have made it any easier to read or understand these blasted things.
