Non-musical history for today: 1853 – The Crimean War began when the Ottoman Empire declared war on the Russian Empire. It was fought between Russia and an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom, and Sardinia. Geopolitical causes included the Eastern Question (the decline of the Ottoman Empire), Russia’s expansion in the preceding Russo-Turkish wars, and the British and French preference to preserve the Ottoman Empire to maintain the balance of power in the Concert of Europe. Three years later, the Allies won, and Russia lost the Danube Delta and Southern Bessarabia.
